How do I create a password-protected MISMO XML file?

Some clients may require additional security when your report is sent as a MISMO XML file. The MISMO XML specification itself does not include the ability to password-protect a file, and therefore it is not possible to do this within Appraise-It. However, it is possible to use a third-party file archiving tool such as 7-Zip, WinZip, or WinRAR to create a password-protected archive containing your MISMO XML file, which you can then send to your client.

Please note that SFREP does not support any non-SFREP product, and the following information is provided without any express or implied warranty or support for the described product. SFREP is not responsible for the content of external web sites.

1. If you do not already have a third-party file archiving tool installed, do so. 7-Zip is free for both personal and commercial use, and is used in this walkthrough. Other third-party tools will have similar steps; please refer to their documentation if you need help.
2. Open your completed report in Appraise-It and generate your MISMO XML file as you would normally, then open the folder where your MISMO XML file is saved (the default location is C:\TRADATA\PDF).
3. Select the correct PDF and MISMO XML files (hold down "Ctrl" and click on each file in turn), then right-click on one of the selected files and go to 7-ZipAdd to archive...

4. In the Add to Archive dialog, select "zip" in the Archive Format drop-down, specify a password in the Encryption section, and select "AUS-256" in the Encryption Method drop-down, then click OK.

5. A new ZIP file will appear in your MISMO XML's folder, named after the folder (i.e., the default location is C:\TRADATA\PDF, so the ZIP file will be named "PDF.zip"). If you wish to rename it to match your report file, right-click on the ZIP file, select Rename, then type in the correct name.

You should then be able to send this ZIP file to your client via email or web upload as usual. If your client did not specify the password you were to use when creating the PDF, make sure you provide the password you selected to them, otherwise they will be unable to view your report. If you are unsure what password to specify, contact your client.
