Why am I getting an Access Violation error?

When working in Appraise-It (or any other program), you may run into an Access Violation. These error can have different numbers/letters in their error codes, but they all mean the same thing - the program has entered an unstable state and needs to be closed and reopened before continuing your work.

We are not aware of any reproducible Access Violations in Appraise-It, i.e. if you experience an Access Violation, if you close and reopen the program and recreate what you were doing when the Access Violation occured, it will not occur again. If you discover a reproducible Access Violation, please contact Technical Support so we can assist you with it. We anticipate releasing a major update to Appraise-It in early 2013 that should eliminate any and all Access Violations, including non-reproducible ones.

If you are unable to close Appraise-It via standard means (the red X button at the upper right or going to File --> Exit), it may be necessary to end Appraise-It via the Windows Task Manager. The Task Manager is a utility that allows you to control what programs and process are running on your computer.

1. Open the Task Manager by simultaneously holding down "CTRL+SHIFT+ESC".
2. If it is not already open, go to the Applications tab at the top of the dialog. You will see a list of the programs that are currently open on your computer. Find Appraise-It, select it, and click End Task.

3. If Appraise-It is not in the Applications list, go to the Processes tab and find TRA.exe. Select it and click End Process. You will receive a popup asking if you are sure you want to end TRA.exe; click End Process again.

4. Appraise-It should close. At this point, you can reopen Appraise-It and continue your work.

If Appraise-It will not close, even when using Task Manager to end it, you may need to reboot your computer to continue.
